The problem

Where you grow up shouldn't decide what you can learn.

The UK brass band tradition is a significant part of British cultural identity, built by working-class communities in industrial towns. It is under pressure, and the places that built it now have some of the thinnest opportunity in the country. Whether a young player gets a proper teacher, or any way into banding at all, depends almost entirely on geography and luck. The tradition needs a dependable way in.

What's on the platform

Built for the way brass players actually learn.

A pathway in, not a destination. School of Brass meets players where they are, from first long notes to contest-day nerves, and points them toward the bands and teachers who can carry them further.

1

Technique courses

Filmed lessons from top-seat players, covering every chair in the band.

2

Searchable library

Stuck on triple tonguing? Search it and watch a top player break it down. Plus performances, interviews and the stories behind banding.

3

Section progression

Everyone starts in 4th Section and climbs by completing courses, up through 3rd, 2nd and 1st to Championship. It measures your own learning journey, whether your band contests or not.

4

Legendary band pairing

Reach Championship and wear the crest of a legend: Black Dyke, Grimethorpe, Brighouse, Fairey, Cory, Foden's.

5

Phone first design

Ten minutes on the bus or a full Sunday session, it meets you there. Save your place, pick up anywhere.

6

Commissioned recordings

Six top players filmed up close, plus a full band recorded with the conductor talking you through the performance.

Who it's for

Two players. One platform built for both.

Ian
11 years old, cornet, small English town

No one at home to drive the practice. He needs lessons that stretch him, on his phone, any time. School of Brass gives him a path to follow and heroes to chase.

Evelyn
45 years old, head of year, returning after 27 years

The lip needs rebuilding, and the confidence with it. She wants expert help at her own pace, on her own terms. The platform gives her a route home.

How it works

Subscriber funded. Creator shared. Built to last.

Between £5 and £10 a month at launch, rising gently as the catalogue grows. A share of every subscription goes straight to the musicians who teach on it. The build is proposed for funding through an Arts Council England National Lottery Project Grant. From launch, banding funds its own.

Tell us what you think

The two-minute survey asks how you learn now, what you'd want from this, and what would put you off. Honest answers are the useful ones.

Spot who it's for

If you can think of a type of player we've missed, or you know the young player or returner this is built for, we want to hear about it.

Teach on it

Tutors and players who'd like to contribute content earn a share of the subscription revenue their teaching generates.
